THE OPPORTUNITY

What could local control mean?

Four areas where a Sherwood-based district could make a measurable difference.

The facts so far

A defined process is already underway. Here's the documented progress to date.

Feasibility study completed

An independent study completed in June of 2026, determined Sherwood has the students and tax base to sustain its own district.

Legal pathway identified

Arkansas Law 6-13-1501 through 6-13-1505 defines the process of creating a "school district by detaching territory from existing school district." The law can be found at https://law.justia.com/codes/arkansas/title-6/subtitle-2/chapter-13/subchapter-15/

Community engagement underway

Volunteers, local meetings, and outreach are building public understanding of the proposal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How will a new school board be formed?

An interim school board of seven members will be appointed by the State Board of Education. The interim board will make decisions until "the next regular election of members when a board of directors shall be elected in compliance with Arkansas law."

How long will a changeover take when the proposal is approved?

The process will include several steps before an election is ordered by the State Department of Education. After the voters approve the formation of the Sherwood School District, the subsequent transition period does not have a fixed timeline, though the full rollout is expected to take between 18 months and two years.

COMMUNITY VOICES

What Sherwood residents are saying

Sherwood deserves a school district that reflects its identity, strengthens community pride, and puts our students first. I believe our children, our schools, and our community would all be stronger because of it.

— M. Duncan, educator, parent and SHHS graduate

Sherwood having their own school district will be beneficial to the entire community.

— M. Oglesby, Business Owner and Sherwood Rotarian

Our city is ready to take on the responsibility of our own school district. We can handle the tax structure and it will flourish. I wholeheartedly support.

Sherwood students attend Sherwood schools, but decisions about those schools are made outside the community. The Sherwood Public Education Foundation exists to help residents understand the facts, explore the opportunities, and participate in the conversation.
